 Cari amici,

Palestine, 5/12/2013

Dear friends,

Marwan has spent 18 years of his life in Israeli jails, including the last 11 years. These have been difficult years for me as a wife and as a mother. But I decided not to wait for my husband’s release, but to actively advocate it. And to use his case, and his notoriety, to serve the cause of Palestinian prisoners. I often say that I work in this campaign motivated by my feelings as a wife who wants her husband back but also by the belief of the citizen in me that our country needs to see Marwan freed and our prisoners freed. Their freedom is the condition of our own.

During these years, there were times of despair, I do not want to hide it, of doubt and of pain. But the support of freedom lovers around the world, of friends, who were always present and committed to defend justice in Palestine, I always found the way back to hope. There is no better example of this support than our dear friend Luisa, who was there from the first day, and everyday since, and who was the only international guest present in South Africa and on Robben Island, as an integral part of our delegation. It is from Robben Island, from the cell of one of the greatest symbols of freedom of our time, Nelson Mandela, that this international campaign was launched by the anti-apartheid icon Ahmed Kathrada, who launched the release Mandela Campaign 51 years ago, before spending himself 26 years in apartheid jails.

Why choose Marwan as symbol of this Campaign for the freedom of all Palestinian prisoners? Leaders from all political factions in a joint letter for the 11th anniversary of his arrest said about him that « he is the most prominent and renowned Palestinian political prisoner in Israeli jails,… a strong advocate of his people’s freedom and dignity, of reconciliation and democracy, of peace based on international law ». Marwan was the first MP to be arrested. At that time, I toured the world saying that in the absence of strong international reaction he will not be the last MP to be detained. At one point, over one third of our Parliament, around 50 MPs were in Israeli jails. Today, 16 MPs are still imprisoned, including a dozen under administrative detention.

Marwan boycotted the Israeli court, which is an instrument of occupation not justice. Israel wanted to prosecute the Palestinian people and its struggle, and to criminalise it. It thus condemned Marwan to 5 life sentences, and, just in case he survived, 40 years. By calling for Marwan’s release, you are contributing to denounce this shameful system which violates the rights of all our prisoners. 750 000 Palestinians have gone in and out Israeli jails since 1967. 5000 remain imprisoned today. This Campaign will only end with the release of each and everyone of them, including the leader Ahmad Saadate, Secretary General of the Popular Front for the liberation of Palestine, and the great militant Karim Younes, the longest serving prisoner still in Israeli jails, where he spent until now 32 years of his life.

Allow me to seize this opportunity to underline the importance of the work done by the Russell Tribunal on Palestine, as Israeli impunity is the reason why this is the longest occupation in modern history. And I can not but honour here the memory of a man who has embodied the quest for human rights, Stéphane Hessel. We are proud that both himself and his wife agreed to be part of the International High Level Committee for the freedom of Marwan and all prisoners. Dear Pierre Galand, the remarkable work done by the Tribunal make it an important instrument for both accountability and peace based on international law, and we know we can count on your personal support and the tribunal’s support for this important Campaign.

Finally, I want to salute two Ambassadors of Palestine who have combined diplomacy and militancy, and who are impressive representatives of Palestine, and of Palestinian women. Mai is a dear and close friend who knows Marwan since his years in Birzeit. Leila knew him well as he was Chair of the Palestine-France friendship group in the Palestinian Legislative Council when she was Ambassador in France, and she played an instrumental role in making France the heart of our international endeavour, and then in mobilising the European Parliament for the release of Marwan and all MPs, as well as for prisoners’ rights. Thank you both for leading the battle for the freedom and dignity of our people on one of the most important fronts, the international one.

As the release of Mandela and anti-apartheid prisoners paved the way to freedom, peace and reconciliation in South Africa, the release of Marwan and all Palestinian prisoners will be instrumental in achieving these goals, and the prisoners’ document is an undeniable proof of this. Occupation and oppression will be vanquished, and freedom, return and independence shall prevail. Freedom is the precondition of peace, and by serving the cause of freedom, you serve the cause of peace. And today, what you are doing here in Italy brings us one step closer to the realization of these nobel objectives.

Thank you dear Luisa for the unbelievable work you are doing, thank you dear friends, and I am convinced that one day a free Marwan will welcome you all in a free Palestine.

  Fadwa Barghouthi
